This is the beginning page to construct and manage your free websites. Under "Your Website Management Tools" the beginner should start by clicking on "Website Wizards". This give you a head start in the design process, and you need no HTML programming skills. Under "Getting Started" choose "start building your website". You will then be able to choose the layout and "look" of your new site. You will have two choices, "Building From A Theme" or "Custom Build Your Site". I will lead you through the process of "Building From A Theme" as it has built-in photos. Choose "Building From A Theme" then on the left scrolling column choose one of the themes by clicking on it. It will appear on the right, if you like it, click "Use This Theme" button. You will then be asked to "Select your Main Page (Index) Layout". This is just what you want your MAIN page to look like. Click on one of the layouts then "Save and Continue". 4. You will then enter your Header and Footer Information. (Basic Site Info) This text will appear at the top and bottom of your new free website. After entering your text click "Save and Continue". 5. You will then edit the "Page Content" by editing the different "Blocks" of text on your site. These are the main text sections of the page. Choose a "Content Block" to edit by clicking on the corresponding page. Replace the text in the box, then click "Save and Continue". Repeat this step until you have edited all of your text blocks. Then at the bottom, click "Done Editing This Page". 6. You can now add more pages to your site at "Manage your Pages & Services". To add a new page, type in your desired page name in the box to the right of "Page Name:" Do not use capital letters or have spaces in the page name and do not put file extensions at the end like .htm or .html. For example; a page name could be myphotos. Type in your desired page name and click "Add Page". You will then choose the layout by choosing a page in your theme of what you want that page to look like. Click on your choice, then "Save and Continue". You will then edit the text "Blocks" as in step 5. Repeat this step until you have edited all of your text blocks. Then at the bottom, click "Done Editing This Page". You can add as many pages as you like in this way and there will automatically be a link to them from your Main (index) page. (You can also add your free add-ons like guestbooks, counters etc, here at "Manage your Pages & Services") 7. You are now ready to make your website LIVE by clicking the "Publish Website" button at the bottom of the page. If you are completely done editing, click "Finish Building And Publish Website" at the bottom of the page. Congratulations! Your website has been published to the Internet! You will be shown the web address to your site. You should click on it and save it to your favorites. 8. NOW.. THIS IS IMPORTANT! To make changes to your site, log in and click the "websites" tab, click on the website you want to work on, then click "File Manager". Your page titles will appear on the left. Do not be alarmed if you see the html code of your page. Your main page will be called "index.html" and the other pages will be named what you named them in step 6. To edit a page, right click on the desired page title on the left and choose "edit with visual editor". You may get a window open that says "Are you sure you want to edit this file?" Click "OK". Your page will appear, as well as a toolbar, and several files in the left column. To edit the other pages from here you may right click on a page name and choose "edit in visual editor". Make sure to "SAVE YOUR WORK" when you are done by clicking on the larger floppy disc icon in the top left toolbar. 9. To upload pictures (or other file types) at any time, just log in and click the "websites" tab. Under "manage websites", click the website you want to work on. (remember, you are allowed 5 free sites) Then click "file manager" and choose the "Upload File " link. You can also create new pages here by clicking "Create File". At "Upload File", browse your computer for your desired file or photo and click the "upload file" button. 9.5 To insert an image onto your page, you have two options: Click on the page where you want the photo, then... If the file is on the internet somewhere, click on the "Insert Image" icon on the top toolbar. You can then type in the address of the image in the popup box. PLEASE DO NOT LINK TO IMAGES ON OTHER PEOPLES' SITES WITHOUT PERMISSION! You can right click on the image, and save it to your computer, then upload it as in #9. If you have already uploaded the file, and you are in "Visual Editor mode", click on your page where you want the image to appear, then click on the desired image file in the left column, and choose "Insert into webpage". 10. To create a link from one page to another, type the text you want to link FROM, then highlight it and click the "Create link" icon on the top left toolbar. Type in the destination link. If the page is within your site you only need the page name without the http://. If you are linking to a page outside your site you need the entire address including the http://. 10.5 Do not be afraid to experiment with the other tools on the toolbar. A table is a most valuable tool to insert into your page. It makes inserting images and text blocks a lot easier! Also the "embed web tool" on the top toolbar is free access to the many cool free website add-ons at Bravenet! SAVE YOUR WORK!!! 11. Inserting ads, scripts, and html code: First in your "visual editor" find the location you want your code or script to be on the page and type xxxxx. This is so you can find it when you go into "text editor". In text editor, you will see the html code. Look for the xxxxx and replace that with your advertising code. Save your work, then switch back to visual editor and you should see your results. _____________________________________________________________ |
