I have more fun changing the backgrounds around than any other part of web design. They can be as simple as a plain white page, to the most colorful animated images. Most backgrounds start as a small thumbnail of a tiled jpeg or gif image. When applied as a background the pattern is repeated until the page is filled. Like any photo or graphic, the bigger the file, the slower the page will load. Use graphics and animation sparingly, so even the poor souls with dialup internet can enjoy your site. Backgrounds can be captured as easy as any photo or animation. If you see a background you like, try right clicking on the field and choose "save picture as", thus saving it to your computer. There are also many sites that offer free backgrounds.
